SEO itself can be a complicated process to explain but, simply put it is the art of getting a website to be recognized by search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN and others so that whenever a user searches for something that is relevant to your business, your website is one of the top sites in the list. Most search engines have "spiders" or "crawlers" or "robots" that seek out your site and index your home page. The way they seek out your home page is through incoming links from other sites. Generally it’s thought that search engines rank your site based on the quality of incoming links from other site and the quality and originality of your site content. Of course each engine will not give away it’s secrets on the method of search but to rank higher in a search engine for specific key words, your website needs to have those words spread on your pages or in links that point to your page/site. Ideally a bit of both is the most desirable combination. How well you rank depends on how well you look into the little things on your website. Some key things to look for when designing your pages

  • Simply adding your website as a link on other sites is not the answer. Search engines are clever enough to figure out a "dummy link" as opposed to a "quality link". For this reason it’s better to put your links on fewer "trusted" sites as opposed to many "un-trusted" sites. The more trusted sites you link from, the more trust a search engine will have in your site resulting in a higher ranking.
  • By designing your pages so that links within the text on your page point to other pages on your site with keywords in it. This gives search engines more fodder to go through your site.
  • Another key area to consider is to have unique pages, with unique page titles, and unique page descriptions. Search engines review your pages and will know if you have replicated content from other pages and will therefore ignore your pages.
  • If you choose to link out to sites, try to link to those that are within your realm of business and if possible get links back from those sites to your site. Remember again that originality is the key to attracting better ranking in a search engines eyes.
  • You can help a search engine by identifying which pages on your site are the most important by always linking to them. Wherever possible use links to your sales keywords and spread these throughout your site.
  • A site index is a must for most search engines especially Google.
  • Don’t build a site in Flash only.
  • Don’t create sites with Frames.
  • Don’t hide text.
  • Make the search engines think that the content of your site is the most relevant for your specific keywords or search phrases.
